Dr. Friedrich Götz Travels to Europe for Invited Lecture, Conferences, and Strategic Collaboration with the United Nations

Our lab is excited to share a quick update on Dr. Götz’s recent trip to Europe, where he engaged in a series of academic and professional activities that highlight the intersection of psychology, geography, and sustainable development.

The journey began in Copenhagen, where Dr. Götz was invited by the University of Copenhagen to deliver the SODAS Lecture at the Center for Social Data Science. Titled “The place to be? At the nexus of psychology and geography,” the lecture explored the dynamic relationship between these two fields and was a major success. You can read more about the event here.

Following the lecture, Dr. Götz traveled to Vienna to attend the 53rd biennial congress of the German Psychological Society (DGPS). As part of the symposium “Digital Data and Computational Approaches in Personality Psychology,” he presented findings from our SSHRC-funded research program on the dark sides of courage, contributing to a thought-provoking session.

After that, in Dr. Götz’s role as co-chair of the SPSP United Nations Committee together with fellow SPSP members Dr. Andrés Gvirtz (King’s College London) and Dr. Jana Berkessel (University of Mannheim), he travelled to the United Nations Headquarters in Vienna. Here they toured the premises and met with representatives of the UN Civil Society Unit to initiate a strategic long-term collaboration with SPSP. This collaboration aims to apply insights from social and personality psychology to promote sustainable development. Afterwards, generously hosted by the UN NGO Committee on Sustainable Development, Dr. Götz, Dr. Gvirtz, and Dr. Berkessel presented a symposium held at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, on “Applying lessons from social and personality psychology to sustainable development,”  wherein Dr. Götz gave a talk entitled: “The psychology of cities and their development.” The event was met with an enthusiastic reception from attendees.

This trip not only showcased the impact of our lab’s research but also initiated valuable partnerships that will further bridge the gap between psychology and global development. We look forward to the continued collaborations ahead!
